Paradise Lost

February 10, 2005

Went down the coast last weekend. My first time since it happened.

It’s hard to consolidate what I’ve seen in the media and what I saw with my own eyes on the drive down. Even at the best of times parts of this country look like the arse-end of a explosive ordnance testing ground. But this was something else. Words really can’t describe it. It was almost surreal watching people living in the midst of a disaster area. Cars driving past wrecked boats on the side of the road. Teams trying to salvage a large fishing boat capsized in the water. Waterlines on the walls of houses. Buildings with the walls on the ground floor washed away, support columns turned into stilts for the floors above.

And through it all the sea was more beautiful than I’ve ever seen it in all my life.
